Pence Casts Tie-Breaking Vote Overturning Obama Rule Requiring States Fund Planned Parenthood

On Friday the Senate passed H.J. Res. 43, with a little tie-breaking help from Vice President Mike Pence. The resolution overturned a last minute push by the Obama administration while Obama was still in office that forced states to fund Planned Parenthood, rather than choosing which healthcare organizations to support with taxpayer dollars.

As noted by Live Action News:

The resolution was sponsored by Congresswoman Diane Black in the House and Senator Joni Ernst in the Senate. Black and Ernst called Obama’s parting gift to Planned Parenthood an “11th hour rule to entrench federal funding for Planned Parenthood – the nation’s single largest provider of abortion.” The duo pledged to “continue to work together this year to undo the damage done by the Obama administration.”

Vice President Mike Pence was proud to cast the tie-breaking pro-life vote, as noted in his recent twitter post in which he stated, “It was my honor to break tie vote in Senate overturning last minute Obama rule & restoring state control over Title X family planning funds.”

The Obama administration was so shortsighted when they created the measure to protect Planned Parenthood funds that they didn’t consider the Congressional Review Act, which Congress used to amend it. Now that the GOP has overturned it, the only way to reinstate the rule is with a new law from Congress, signed by the president.

The Washington Post notes words of clarity referencing the resolution from Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), “It’s a simple statement of where we used to be, states could choose to have Planned Parenthood as part of their Title X funding [but] states should not be compelled to.”.

This conservative victory puts a little more power back into the state’s hands, according to The Blaze:

Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List, said in a statement, “Today, Congress is sending a Resolution to President Trump ensuring that states are not forced to fund America’s abortion giant, Planned Parenthood, with Title X tax dollars.”

This is great news for the pro life community, as conservative states now have the power to put Title X funds towards pro-life healthcare providers, such as community health clinics. Vice President Pence voted to give power back to the states and the American people, freeing them to again use taxpayer dollars as their consciences desire. This tie-breaking vote my Vice President Mike Pence brings the American people one step closer to restoring the national morality that so many voted for in the 2016 election. With abortion giant Planned Parenthood kept in check, many can start to see hope for an America that again recognizes and celebrates the value of life.

  1. I know that in states where Democrats are the majority in the government that the only way to stop them from funding abortion is to vote them out of office. However, the Republicans have done a lot of things that will eliminate the opportunity to get enough votes to do that. Some examples of why I and others would no longer vote Republican is because of their intention to alter and in my opinion ruin benefits such as social security, medicare, health care, violating tribal lands and risking damaging the native american’s water source with the oil pipeline, etc. It seems that now that Republicans are in office they are more frequently doing things that make people no longer willing to vote for them more often then they do things that make people want to vote for them. I like Pence’s vote on this issue. Can’t say I feel the same way about most of Trump’s plans. I thank God that the new health care ideas he tried to pass failed.. While I don’t like ObamaCare because of the penalty people who can’t afford to buy even the cheapest of insurance plans are harmed even more by being forced to pay a penalty (two of my relatives have been harmed by that)….even those who purchase the medical insurance have a $5,000 deductible with high co-pays after that so in the end unless a major medical issue comes up they never get one penny of their health care paid for by insurance. In fact, they can’t afford to pay $5,000 of health care and generally end up with no health care at all because after paying for the insurance, they have no money left to pay for their own health care at all… they go without it. I definately would be impressed if such issues were dealt with wisely by the Trump administration but it seems that instead of improving and correctly ObamaCare to ensure that everyone has access to medical care (including the basics for pregnancy, health exams, mental health, and all the things they try to eliminate coverage for) instead of making sure that more types of medical care are eliminated from insurance coverage. We need lower cost, lower deductibles, and everyone pays the same. If it were up to me I would set up an insurance coverage plan the same as the one they have in Germany. Everybody pays into it pretty much the same and all health care is free to everyone from birth until death. No one has to go without medical care in Germany. Learn from them.
