This past Sunday’s game between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants included a sad but special pro life moment.
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Marquise Goodwin revealed just why he got so emotional after scoring an 83 yard touchdown, one of the biggest plays in Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.
Upon scoring his first touchdown as a member of the 49ers, Goodwin was seen to blow a kiss to the sky and then spent what appeared like a moment in prayer in the endzone. Yahoo Sports has more on the story:
Goodwin had Giants’ corner Janoris Jenkins beat, and ran the last 20 or so yards to the end zone alone. Before he crossed the goal line, Goodwin blew a kiss skyward, and once he was in the end zone, he dropped to one knee, and then two.
He appeared to cross himself and then cradled the ball.
It was an emotional moment.
After the game Goodwin stated the reason for his heightened emotional state by explaining that himself and his wife had just lost their baby boy as a result of him being born prematurely.
The twenty-six year old posted the following heartbreaking post on Instagram:
The post features a photo of what appears to be Goodwin’s hand, cradling the tiny hand of his son who was born prematurely due to complications in the pregnancy. Goodwin captioned the photo, writing, “Unfortunately we lost our baby boy due to some complications, and had to prematurely deliver him early this morning around 4am. Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan. The pain (physically, mentally, & emotionally) that she has endured is unbelievable. ”
The 49ers went on from this huge play in the second quarter to win the game 31-21 against the Giants.
