California Family Council strongly condemns the shameful display of disrespect shown toward Assemblyman Carl DeMaio during recent legislative proceedings, where legislators repeatedly interrupted his remarks with frivolous birthday announcements while he attempted to address substantive policy matters.
Let us be very clear: California Family Council fundamentally opposes Assemblyman DeMaio’s support for “Pride Month” resolutions and his willingness to embrace aspects of the LGBTQ agenda. At the same time, this incident exposes a troubling reality about California’s ideological landscape. Even when the minority party attempts to find a “middle ground” by accommodating the progressive sexual agenda, they are still mocked, dismissed, and treated with contempt.
Our Concerns with Assemblyman DeMaio’s Approach
As California’s first openly homosexual Republican legislator, Assemblyman DeMaio represents a troubling trend. Some within conservative circles seem open to compromising foundational biblical principles in the name of political expediency. Mr. DeMaio’s support for LGBTQ initiatives and “Pride Month” resolutions demonstrates an attempt to co-opt the Republican party and neuter conservative opposition to the sexual revolution.
Christians must understand that not every person who claims the “conservative” label operates from a biblical worldview. True conservatism must be rooted in God’s unchanging truth, not in political pragmatism that abandons moral clarity. When self-identified conservatives embrace and promote the very ideologies that undermine God’s design for sexuality and family, they become unwitting allies of the forces seeking to untether our culture from its biblical foundations.
A Question for Conservatives Tempted by Compromise
We have a respectful challenge for any conservative who may be tempted to support “Pride Month” resolutions, Harvey Milk Day, or similar “olive branch” gestures. What is the end goal of these accommodations with those who ultimately reject God’s design for marriage, sexuality, and gender itself?
These symbolic victories for the LGBTQ movement are not merely ceremonial—they represent the systematic normalization and celebration of behaviors that Scripture clearly identifies as contrary to God’s created order and harmful to society. When we lend our support to such initiatives, even with good intentions, we participate in the cultural lie that rebellion against God’s design should be honored rather than lovingly corrected.
Christ Himself asked the penetrating question: “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?” (Mark 8:36). What political advantage or social acceptance is worth compromising the very truths that define our faith? When we celebrate what God calls us to confront, we abandon our prophetic calling to be salt and light in a decaying culture.
Conform or Face Consequences
“This episode perfectly illustrates that the secular sexual ethos is a totalitarian package deal that cannot tolerate deviations from complete ideological conformity,” said Jonathan Keller, President of California Family Council. “What we saw on the floor of the legislature on Monday shows that many progressive activists don’t want compromise or dialogue. They demand absolute submission to their radical worldview that rejects God’s design for human sexuality and the family.”
The majority’s childish behavior demonstrates that no amount of accommodation will ever be sufficient for those who have rejected biblical truth in favor of cultural ideology. Whether traditionalists offer 50%, 75%, or even 99% agreement with the LGBTQ agenda, they will still face ridicule and exclusion because this movement cannot coexist with any acknowledgment of traditional moral values.
This is precisely why principled conservatives must stand firm on biblical truth rather than seeking futile compromises with an ideology that views any dissent as hate. Scripture calls us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2), not to conform to the patterns of this world – even when doing so might temporarily reduce political friction.
As Christians, we possess the truth about humanity that our culture desperately needs to hear. God created us male and female with inherent purpose and design (Genesis 1:27). We must lovingly but boldly proclaim to our broken world that no amount of “pride” in rebellion against God’s created order will ever satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart. Only by embracing our Creator’s design for sexuality, marriage, and family can true fulfillment be found. The answer to human brokenness is not celebration of sin, but redemption through Jesus Christ.
