SB 1375 Still Needs Opposition

California Democrats are considering a bill that would allow nurses to perform abortions without a doctor present.

SB 1375 states that non-physicians may perform abortions unsupervised as long as the nurse has “been practicing a minimum of three full-time equivalent years or 4,600 hours as of January 1, 2023.”

The bill is likely to pass the heavily-progressive legislature and be signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has vowed to make California an abortion sanctuary. Unsurprisingly, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, the California chapter of the American Nurses Association and the California Association for Nurse Practitioners all support the bill.

Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins introduced the bill and claims that it is necessary to address the growing abortion demand and the lack of abortion providers.

“With an increasing shortage of providers, far too many Californians are struggling to get the care they need, when they need it,” said Atkins. “Patients — especially pregnant people considering abortion — don’t have time to waste. That’s why it is so important that highly skilled, qualified nurse practitioners have the opportunity to practice independently, including the ability to provide first term abortions.”

Abortion, however, is not “care,” as Atkins describes it. Abortion is a harmful procedure that kills an innocent life and harms a mother every time it is performed. Further, abortion is not safe even when experienced physicians perform them. The last thing struggling mothers need is a harmful procedure performed by an under-qualified provider.

Additionally, abortion is never necessary, as Atkins insinuates. The vast majority of abortions are not performed for the sake of the mother’s health, and for those that are, there are better ways to care for a mother who is experiencing complications.

This bill is an attempt to increase profits for abortion providers and combat the growing pro-life movement, especially with the Dobbs Supreme court case underway. Democrats are willing to put mothers in danger and prioritize abortion access over women’s safety in order to further their radical abortion agenda.

The dangers once imposed by infamous abortionist Kermit Gosnell are now being imposed by our legislature. Gosnell delegated tasks within an abortion procedure to non-physicians, one of whom was a young teenage girl. Gosnell was found guilty of manslaughter in 2015 after one of his patients died. He was also found guilty of first-degree murder after three born-alive babies died. This is the kind of danger our legislature is willing to subject women to for the sake of their vile abortion agenda.

What women experiencing crisis pregnancies really need is information about the help and support available to them. Most women “choose” abortion out of desperation and end up living with life-long pain and grief. If democrats and abortion providers really cared about women’s health, they would focus on life-affirming care.

SB 1375 is a radical bill that would lead to many more abortions in California and compromise women’s safety.

Please contact our representatives and urge them to oppose SB 1375.
