New York Senate Passes Bill Legalizing Late Term Abortions

Yesterday, the New York Senate passed an atrocious bill that would legalize aborting babies clear up to birth for basically any reason. The bill passed on a vote of 38 in favor to 24 against.

Abortion activists have been pushing the bill for more than a decade in New York, but their efforts up until this point have been unsuccessful. However, since the November election, Democrats are now in control of both houses of Congress.

The legislation is even more far reaching and dangerous than Roe v. Wade. The would allow late term abortions and would even allow people who are not doctors to perform them. Worse yet, the bill attempts to give the appearance of limiting late term abortions, but includes a very broad “health” exception for abortions after 24 weeks. The exception would allow women to have an abortion for up to nine months of pregnancy for “age, economic, social and emotional factors, rather than the biological definition of ‘health’ that normally comes to mind,” according to New York Right to Life.

Governor Andrew Cuomo, himself a pro abortion activist, supports the bill, and has even threatened to hold up the budget until the bill is passed. The bill is titled the Reproductive Health Act and attempts to redefine “a human being who has been born and is alive,” and describes abortion as a “fundamental right.”

The bill will open the door for all kinds of manipulations and emotional, psychological, and physical abuse of women. If the bill becomes law, home abortions could become much more common. Additionally, abusive partners or parents would no longer receive legal repercussions for harming a woman’s preborn child.

Additionally, New York State Right to Life predicted that the bill will lead to pro life peoples’ suppression of rights and free speech.

“In early December, a resident of Saratoga County was arrested for punching the stomach of a woman who was 26 weeks pregnant in an attempt to cause a miscarriage. The man was charged with abortion in the second degree, but under the RHA, the attacker would not have been charged with a felony,” Catholic News Service reports.
