| RIGHTS OF CONSCIENCE (12/18/08) |
An issue stripped from the annals of California court cases, the champions of “rights” seem intent on assuring the “rights” of humanism – a lesbian to be inseminated, a homosexual couple to adopt, women to receive insurance that includes birth control, and a teen to receive an abortion – while ignoring rights of conscience – a doctor morally opposed to inseminating an unmarried woman, a faith-based adoption agency that desires the placement of children only with two married parents, a religious-based hospital opposed to abortion, or a pharmacist opposed to dispensing the morning-after pill. ... | IN THE CAPITOL (12/11/08) |
Perhaps, as described by Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, some legislators on both sides of the aisle, are living in a state of “denial.” Legislators, deeply divided on partisan lines, have failed to address a growing fiscal crisis, publicly estimated – until yesterday – at $28 billion over two years. Yesterday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, in a press conference, lambasted legislators for their inaction – and warned that the state faces a “financial Armageddon” where the deficit could climb upwards of $40 billion over 18 months.... | NEW LEGISLATORS TAKE OVER (12/4/08) |
Failure by lame-duck legislators to solve the mounting budget crisis last month paved the way for the new group of legislators to take over. Most years, in the first year of the two-year legislative session, legislators convene in Sacramento the first of December to swear-in new members, organize for the new session, and begin bill introductions – to then return to their districts until after the new year.... | “CULTURE WARS” (4/19/07) |
Perhaps an over-used phrase, “culture wars” none-the-less remains an apt description of the battle raging around us – a battle of truth versus humanism. This clash of worldviews is played out in our schools, our communities, our government, and even our families and places of worship.... Read

| UNMARRIED AMERICA – LOGICAL CONSEQUENCES? (10/2/08) |
One bill that died in the Senate Appropriations Committee last spring, SB 1066 (Migden), would have extended domestic-partnership benefits to any two unmarried, unrelated adults with a common residence. (Currently in California, domestic partnerships are limited to same-sex couples or heterosexual couples over age 62.) One Southern Californian is now claiming that’s discriminatory. Michael Imel wants to put his girlfriend on his health-insurance policy. ... Read

| IN THE CAPITOL (11/20/08) |
Traditionally, after the November election, the Capitol is empty, and members are in their districts and recovering from campaign activities. During this time period, a majority of Capitol staff take vacations to rest after the political season; however, this year the Capitol is unusually busy. Fueled by the state’s $11.2 billion deficit, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called the current Legislature into a special session to address the deficit. ... Read
